LUMUT: Public concerns about the alleged sighting of a crocodile in Teluk Batik waters have eased following monitoring operations conducted by authorities.
The latest effort saw the Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) conducting patrols in the area to assist the Perak State Civil Defence Force (APM) in closely monitoring the situation.
Perak Maritime Director, Captain Mohamad Shukri Khotob, said the sighting of the reptile last Thursday had raised alarm among visitors.
In response, Perak Maritime initiated patrols to ensure the safety of the public in the vicinity.
The crocodile, believed to be a saltwater crocodile (Crocodylus porosus), is suspected to have wandered away from its natural habitat. Authorities believe it may return to its original environment within a certain period.
MMEA also urged maritime communities and the public to prioritize safety while at sea, particularly given the unpredictable weather conditions.
The crocodile was previously spotted near the jetty belonging to Vale Mineral (Malaysia) Sdn Bhd, approximately 2.5 kilometres from Teluk Batik Beach.
Meanwhile, APM and the Perak Wildlife Department (PERHILITAN) have been conducting monitoring operations and have set up traps as part of efforts to capture the crocodile.
