Perak Aims to Become the Country’s Health Tourism Hub

By: Rosli Mansor Ahmad Razali

IPOH: Perak is poised to emerge as a leading health tourism hub in Malaysia, said Menteri Besar Dato’ Seri Saarani Mohamad.

He noted that the state’s strategic location, backed by a network of world-class public and private hospitals, can strengthen the nation’s health tourism agenda.

“Malaysia’s health tourism sector has grown rapidly, generating RM1.7 billion in 2019 and is expected to reach RM2.26 billion this year, with Perak contributing to this progress,” he said during his speech at the 120th Anniversary Dinner of Perak Community Specialist Hospital (PCSH) recently.

Among the private hospitals in Ipoh offering world-class health services are Perak Community Specialist Hospital (PCSH), Fatimah Hospital, KPJ Ipoh Specialist Medical Centre, Pantai Hospital, and Seri Botani Hospital.

He added that private hospitals in Manjung, Taiping, and Teluk Intan also play a key role in providing high-quality healthcare services.

“With the growing number of internationally accredited private medical centres, Ipoh’s ambition to become a health city by 2025 is achievable.

“This will not only enhance Perak’s image globally but also boost the state’s competitiveness in the health tourism sector,” he said.

He also highlighted the development of new private medical centres, including Seri Botani Hospital, which has been operational since March, and the Sunway Medical Centre, which is expected to begin operations early next year.

“These developments demonstrate Ipoh’s commitment to meeting the demands of health tourists, both local and international. These modern and high-quality health infrastructures will undoubtedly increase tourists’ confidence in Perak as a destination of choice,” he added.

Saarani further informed that Malaysia remains a top destination for health tourists, particularly from Indonesia, India, and the Middle East.

“The key factors driving Malaysia’s popularity are world-class healthcare services at competitive costs, comprehensive medical infrastructure and a strategic location.

“However, we must be prepared for competition from neighbouring countries like Thailand, Singapore, and South Korea, known for their luxurious healthcare services.

“Improving service quality and support from both the public and private sectors will continue to be the main drivers of health tourism growth in Perak, contributing to the state and nation’s economy,” he concluded.
