IPOH: Everyone knows that Sultan Yusoff Road is home to many popular spots for visitors to Ipoh in the surrounding area.
The road is not that busy, but what has been a complaint among Ipoh residents is the behavior of some vehicle owners who park their vehicles on the left shoulder of the road.
This includes tour buses and tourist vans.
As a result, it causes other drivers’ journeys to become slow as they have to slow down to pass the shoulder of the road, which has become a parking spot.
Clearly, this is an offense as it involves a traffic obstruction when other vehicles are parked in the path of users and on public roads, thereby disrupting the flow of traffic.
This situation usually occurs during peak hours due to the influx of people visiting nearby attractions.
Expressing his frustration, driver Hafiz Hamidun said that the vehicles parked on the shoulder of the road make it difficult for other users.
“Although this issue is often linked to the lack of parking spaces, it is still not an excuse to stop and park vehicles on the main road shoulder marked with yellow lines.
“If this happened elsewhere, the authorities would quickly issue fines because this really obstructs traffic,” he said.
Business owner Eric Leong suggested that authorities follow the example of other states like Penang, which is strict about traffic matters in tourist areas.
“In George Town, for example, the Penang City Council assigns enforcement officers to prevent anyone from stopping their vehicles on the road shoulder.
“This approach is better than allowing people to park and then issuing fines. Those who get fined will be upset, while other drivers will be angry because the path is blocked,” he explained.
