IPOH: Many people may take up Taekwondo as a hobby or to learn self-defense but for Shazlan Mohd Hanafiah, 39, Taekwondo is more than just a martial art; it is a passion he has nurtured for the past 26 years.
Despite his full-time role as a firefighter, the Sitiawan-born Shazlan has remained dedicated to teaching Taekwondo across Perak, blending his expertise in both fields.
“I still teach Taekwondo today because of my strong passion for this field. Taekwondo is my world,” said Shazlan, who began coaching in 2000 and earned his black belt in 2001.
What sets Shazlan apart as an instructor is his unique approach to training. As a firefighter, Shazlan integrates firefighting techniques into his Taekwondo classes.
“I mix techniques from Aikido, Judo, Muay Thai, and Silat with Taekwondo, creating a more comprehensive training experience.
“In fact, I also include firefighting knowledge, such as basic rescue techniques, for those participating in my Taekwondo classes,” he said.

Shazlan’s journey in Taekwondo began in 1998, and his passion deepened as he observed his master teach.
His commitment has led him to compete at the Asian level, marking one of his key achievements in the sport.
So far, Shazlan has established 15 Taekwondo classes throughout Perak, particularly in schools, with the goal of helping students excel both academically and in self-defense.
“My aim is to teach them discipline, physical health, and the ability to protect themselves and their families,” he said.
Additionally, Shazlan was given the opportunity to teach Taekwondo for eight months to 375 firefighters during their recruitment training at the Wakaf Tapai Fire and Rescue Academy in Terengganu.
