IPOH: Do you remember Sini-Drive, Malaysia’s first-ever drive-in cinema? Today, all that remains of the once-promising attraction is a weathered signboard.
Located in Bandar Meru Raya, Sini-Drive was inaugurated in July 2020 by former Perak Menteri Besar, Datuk Seri Ahmad Faizal Azumu.
The cinema was introduced as a safe entertainment option during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, allowing families to enjoy movies while staying safe.
However, the initiative struggled to gain traction and ceased operations after just a few months.
A recent survey by Ipoh Echo/Peraktastic revealed that the former site of Sini-Drive has now become an unofficial “day and night hangout spot,” as described on a makeshift sign erected at the location.
Suhaidi Osman, 47, a resident from Kelebang, expressed his dissatisfaction with the site being left in disrepair.
“The area has been abandoned for five years now and is pitch dark at night. There are also several food stalls with tents that are no longer in operation.
“This neglected state ruins the view during the day. The authorities, particularly the state government, should step in to clean up the area and repurpose it for commercial use,” he said.
What was once a venue filled with potential is now a shadow of its former self, awaiting the attention of relevant authorities to restore its appeal.
