Volunteers maintain historical signage at Slim River

By Zaki Salleh

SLIM RIVER: Unsung Heroes.

The efforts made by the Malaysian Historical Society (MHG) to clean and maintain the information signs at the Slim River battle site here are not for praise.

Instead, they carry out this work as an initiative to ensure that the signage remains in good condition.

The battle information signs were installed in 2021 as part of an effort to highlight the historical area to visitors and locals.

This was a collaboration between MHGSOC, Sultan Idris University of Education (UPSI), the Perak Heritage and History Association, and the Tanjung Malim District Council.

MHG’s Chief Researcher and Chairman, Shaharom Ahmad, stated that they took the initiative to carry out this work out of a sense of responsibility.

“We are here to carry out cleaning and maintenance work on the Slim Battle signage at Slim Village and Trolak Town.

“At the same time, we also inspected the condition of the Old Slim Village Bridge and the new road built by the Public Works Department (JKR) next to it.

“These maintenance works are regularly carried out to ensure the MHGSOC signage remains in good condition ahead of the upcoming anniversary of the Battle of Slim,” he said.

The battle on January 6, 1942, involved a Japanese infantry regiment with 20 tanks, and two British and Indian army brigades comprising 3,200 personnel.

This event is not only viewed in terms of the British and Indian forces fighting against the Japanese attack, but also for its historical value and the sense of patriotism it evokes.
