Lively Celebrations, Music & Dance

By Anne Das

Bebelec Day Care Centre marked Chinese New Year with a lively celebration, bringing together seniors, caregivers, and families for a day of tradition and camaraderie. The place was bustling with energy, and for the 50 who regularly attend, seeing so many people join in made the occasion even more special.

From the moment guests arrived, the atmosphere was lively. Students from UNIKL played the part with the lion dance costumes, moving through the crowd with enthusiasm. The God of Prosperity made his rounds, handing out gold chocolate nuggets and mandarin oranges, while his companion, the Laughing Buddha, danced along, his wide smiling mask spreading cheer among the attendees.

Cognitive decline brings challenges beyond memory loss—it affects communication, independence, and emotional well-being. For families, supporting a loved one through this journey can be overwhelming. Bebelec, operated by the Dementia Society of Perak, provides structure and stimulation through daily activities tailored for those experiencing cognitive difficulties.

From cognitive stimulation and physiotherapy to music sessions, bingo, jigsaw puzzles, and art, the centre’s programs are designed to encourage interaction and keep the mind active. Social games and group exercises create an uplifting environment for everyone involved.

After a tasty, catered lunch, the celebration reached its high point. The volunteer band, which performs at Bebelec every Friday, led a singalong session. Their repertoire included classic tunes that sparked recognition and energy among the attendees.

Soon, the room transformed into a lively dance floor. Seniors, some in their 80s, got up to sway, clap, and move to the rhythm, joined by family and volunteers.

Music has long been recognized as a powerful tool for memory recall, and its impact was evident. Even those who rarely spoke were humming along, tapping their feet, and engaging in ways beyond words.

Dr. Esther Ebenezer, head of Bebelec, shared with Ipoh Echo, “Seeing our seniors light up today—clapping, dancing, and fully immersed in the celebration—reminds us why spaces like Bebelec matter. It’s about more than day-care; it’s about connection, dignity, and joy.”

As Bebelec continues to provide essential support for individuals experiencing cognitive decline, plans are in place for the upcoming Live-in Bebelec Centre, a long-term residential facility designed to offer dedicated care in a safe and nurturing environment. Currently in its fundraising stage, more details on this initiative will be shared in the near future.
