From Concept to Action: How Reezy in QIU Brings Sustainability to Life

By Daniel Fadzlan
In Malaysia, the concept of sustainability often feels distant – an abstract ideal rather than a practical way of life. This challenge is highlighted by a 2021 study by Siew-Mun Ang, which revealed that over 40 percent of science students in northern Malaysia had never heard of the United Nation’s Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The gap underscores a pressing need to make sustainability relatable, actionable, and accessible to all.
Quest International University (QIU) has stepped up to the challenge with groundbreaking initiative: Reezy in QIU. Spearheaded by Miss Law Yee Chin from the Faculty of Social Sciences, this project introduces Reezy, a robot mascot designed to transform the way people perceive and engage with sustainability.

Reezy is no ordinary mascot – it embodies 17 unique characters, each representing one of the SDGs. These personas, with diverse backgrounds and skills, connect the global goals to everyday actions. “Sustainability and the SDGs can feel intimidating or out of reach,” Law explains. “Reezy bridges that gap, showing that everyone can play a part. Each character isn’t just an icon but a relatable figure that inspires action.”
Turning Sustainability into a Daily Habit
One of the most innovative aspects of the Reezy project is the use of storytelling and technology to make sustainability part of daily life. By harnessing social media platforms, the initiatives engage students, staff and the larger community in conversations about sustainable habits. Fun challenges, interactive videos, and relatable anecdotes make complex ideas easy to understand and integrate into routines.
Law highlights a common barrier to sustainability: the disconnect between global goals and personal action. “Seeing a poster of the 17 SDGs is one thing, but understanding how to translate them into daily habits is another,” she says. Reezy addresses this by illustrating how small, consistent actions – like reducing food waste or supporting mental health – can create a ripple effect of positive change.

“Sustainability isn’t just about saving the environment; it’s about enhancing our quality of life,” Law adds. “Reezy makes it fun, accessible, and even cool – especially for young people, who are crucial to driving change.”
Inspiring Action Through Innovation
Since its launch in September 2024, Reezy in QIU has sparked discussions within the university and beyond. Reezy’s characters have become symbols of how individuals can contribute to sustainable future, whether by adopting eco-friendly habits, reducing hunger, or promoting equality.

The initiative doesn’t stop at awareness. Upcoming events, such as art competition and a mobile exhibition set to debut in May 2025, aim to bring Reezy’s message to even broader audiences. These interactive exhibits will invite participants to envision sustainable futures and demonstrate how small steps can lead to big changes.
The project also tackles the perception that sustainability is an abstract or large-scale concept. By incorporating creative ideas like multilingual resources and mobile exhibitions, Reezy reaches diverse audiences while maintaining cost-effective and sustainable practices.
Recognised for Excellence
Reezy’s innovative approach has not gone unnoticed. Law recently won the Best Poster Presentation award at the inaugural Strategic Communication for a Sustainable Future Colloquium 2024, where her clarity and creative storytelling stood out among participants from leading universities. Recently, the project was also presented by Miss Law at the International Conference on Sustainable Globalization (ICSG 2025), where QIU was awarded the Green University of the Year for 2025.
QIU’s Chief Operating Officer, Nicholas Goh, underscores the importance of initiatives like Reezy. “Sustainability isn’t optional—it’s essential. By integrating SDGs into education and communication, we empower the next generation to lead the charge for a sustainable future.”
A Sustainable Future for All
Law’s vision for Reezy in QIU is clear: make sustainability simple, relatable, and actionable. “Complex ideas don’t inspire action,” she says. “By focusing on what’s do-able and meaningful, we’re creating a movement that’s accessible to everyone.”
As Reezy continues to grow, it serves as a powerful example of how creative communication can drive meaningful change. With its engaging approach and expanding reach, Reezy in QIU is paving the way for a more inclusive and sustainable Malaysia—one habit, one story, and one goal at a time.
