Letter: Launch the “No Plastic Bags Every Day” Campaign in Perak Immediately

By Raveen V.

The Perak state government must implement a “No Plastic Bags Every Day” campaign across the state as soon as possible.

Follow the Penang state government’s actions

Recently, I read about the Penang state government’s plan to launch the “No Plastic Bags Every Day” campaign starting March 1. The campaign will start with the free distribution of reusable bags throughout the state to encourage their use and help the public switch to more sustainable practices.

The Penang government is also enacting a comprehensive framework to gradually eliminate not only plastic bags but also SUP (‘single-use plastics’) throughout the state.

I strongly urge the Perak state government to implement the “No Plastic Bags Every Day” campaign as soon as possible.

Extend the ban on ‘single-use plastics’ to all types of businesses

The Perak government must also ban the use of SUP among hawkers and small traders. The extension of this ban to such small businesses in addition to large retailers and franchises is necessary to ensure efforts to end plastic bags’ usage are truly successful.

This SUP ban must be strictly enforced.

Only such initiatives that prohibit the daily distribution and use of plastic bags can the endemic problem of plastic pollution in our society be quickly eradicated for good!

It can also drastically reduce the quantity of illegally-dumped garbage in public places throughout Perak. This in turn will create a more positive image and attract more tourists, thus contributing to the state’s economic growth.

A shameful example at the Buntong Market!

Recently, I was rudely reminded of the severe levels of plastic pollution and rubbish dumping inherent in our society as I saw the huge amounts of rubbish strewn around the Roll-On Roll-Off bin at the Buntong Market in Ipoh.

Ban plastic bags daily to drastically reduce the amount of garbage

The never-ending problem of illegal rubbish dumping such as the above case at Buntong Market will for sure be drastically reduced if the Perak government immediately:

– Launches the “No Plastic Bags Every Day” campaign.

– Bans the use of ‘single-use plastics’ for all businesses in Perak.

The Perak government must launch the “No Plastic Bags Every Day” campaign as soon as possible for the sake of protecting our environment and the state’s positive image.
