- IPOH: Thousands of visitors, including foreign tourists, enjoyed a special Iftar meal during the Nasi Briani Distribution Programme at Sultan Idris Shah II Mosque.
Among them was Isa Huang from Taiwan, who expressed excitement at tasting nasi briani for the first time.
“This is my first time trying nasi briani, and I find it quite interesting. It might even suit my taste,” she said to Ipoh Echo/Peraktastic.
Huang added that she had only learned about the dish through social media but was amazed by the charity programme’s atmosphere, which brought people together.
Meanwhile, a resident, Miya Wai, said she and her friends from Taiwan happened to be passing by the mosque when they noticed the large crowd queuing for nasi briani.
“This is an eye-opening experience for my friends, allowing them to see how the Muslim community observes Ramadan.
“This programme is also beneficial, especially for those in need, as they get to enjoy a proper meal to break their fast,” she said.
For Mustaqim Mustafa, 19, the annual event was more than just a food distribution programme—it was about strengthening bonds and fostering unity.
“It’s not just about giving out meals. It’s an opportunity for everyone to experience the festive spirit of Ramadan and bring life to the mosque,” he said.
Nor Zuraini Abd Rani, 43, echoed the sentiment, saying she looked forward to the initiative every year as it provided quality meals to the public free of charge.
“The price of nasi briani is quite high nowadays, so this initiative is a great way to ensure that everyone gets to enjoy it.
“I used to only see this programme on social media, but this year, I lined up myself and experienced the excitement firsthand,” she said.
Focus on Underprivileged Communities
Perak Indian Muslim Association (PRIM) chairman Mohamed Arib said the nasi briani distribution had been held since the association’s establishment.
This year, 5,000 packets of nasi briani with chicken were distributed, compared to 7,000 the previous year.
“We replaced 2,000 packets with grocery aid, which was distributed to underprivileged groups to support them during Ramadan.
“We are grateful to the Masjid Negeri Perak for its continuous support in making this programme a success, as it continues to receive an overwhelming response every year,” he said.
