IPOH: The construction of a new exit ramp connecting the North-South Expressway (PLUS) to Jelapang Road and the Ipoh-Lumut Highway is set to stimulate the local economy.
This is not only good news for the residents of Jelapang but also reflects the government’s commitment to local development and the welfare of the people.
Once completed, this route will not only help reduce traffic congestion in the Gerbang Meru Indah area but also encourage business activities in the region.
The project is estimated to cost around RM222.7 million.
Approximately 250 contractors have purchased tender forms so far, showing high interest in the project.
Jelapang State Assemblyman (ADUN), Cheah Pou Hian, said that the implementation of this project is based on public safety and local economic development considerations.
He mentioned that currently, drivers heading to Jelapang have to pass through Gerbang Meru Indah, which is the main road for local residents.
“There are residential areas, factories, and commercial areas along this road.
“Local residents have to share this narrow two-lane road with pedestrians and passing vehicles, especially heavy vehicles such as trailers and trucks. This poses a risk to road users’ safety,” he said.
Cheah further noted that he had raised the need for this exit ramp during the State Legislative Assembly sessions in 2019 and 2020.
Although planning was carried out by the Public Works Department, the project could not be implemented earlier due to insufficient funding.
“In 2023, this project was successfully continued after the funding request from the federal government was approved.
“I would like to thank the Exco for Infrastructure, Energy, Water, and Public Transport of Perak, Datuk Seri Mohammad Nizar Jamaluddin, for his support,” he added.
