Motorsport athlete Ng Aik Sha made a visit to the Perak Women for Women (PWW) Shop yesterday, to help in distributing farm fresh vegetables to the community.
This recipient of the “Female Driver of the Year” award at the Motorsports Association of Malaysia (MAM)’s MAM Awards Night 2024, travelled all the way from Kuala Lumpur earlier in the day, just to give her support in lending a helping hand to those in need.
A former pharmacist specializing in cancer medications at a government hospital, Pusat Perubatan Universiti Malaya, Aik Sha was drawn to the male-dominated field of motorsport after visiting the Sepang Track day and taken around for a few laps. The speed and adrenaline rush enticed her to delve deeper into the sport.
For her first track experience, she did not perform particularly well, but that only motivated her to come back, better than ever.
When asked about the mental and physical challenges of going into this sport, she notes that men tend to be more aggressive in tackling the track, but that women tend to be more strategic. As for the physical side, she noted that women can improve their physical fitness through training, such as weightlifting.
After over 7 years since she entered this field, she wanted to give back and inspire other women to pursue their passions, even in male-dominated fields. When she learned about PWW through one of her sponsors, Mr. Loke Kok Ming of Autoria Sdn. Bhd., she was more than eager to join in.
This PWW programme, which has been around since the Movement Control Order (MCO) days, and supported by the likes of Mr. Loke and various farmers, have helped to lessen the burden of many in need, such as the orphans of the Rainbow Children’s Home.
PWW has a registry of names of those they’ve helped since the MCO and those that they’ve reached out to since then. From there, they arranged for the beneficiaries to receive numbered chits to ease the process during distribution day. Through this, they ensure that no one is missed out or forgotten.
PWW does much more than simply handing out aid, they also empower women by training them in skills, such as baking, as well as provide classes for children.
