Westlake International School (WIS) observed Earth Hour 2025 alongside the rest of the world on 22 March. Earth Hour is celebrated by reducing the use of electricity during the hour, such as by turning off the lights. When enough people celebrate Earth Hour, it can have a positive impact on the environment.
This green event was organised by Mr. Lim Kheng Hoe, a teacher and the organiser of green events at WIS, and included an essay competition with the title of “Tackling Climate Change: What Can Kampar Community Do More?”, which encourages critical thinking and research skills in WIS students.
Two rounds of fundraising through the purchase of collar pins were also held, with the profits to go to a green charity organisation.
WIS topped off Earth Hour with a “tealight candles in the dark” display.
Mr Lim Kheng Hoe stated that “I’ve organised plenty of ‘green’ events in Westlake with help from other students and teachers. I have no fancy job titles or positions of power but I really believe that titles make you a manager but your people make you a leader. All I have is a very deep passion for environmental sustainability and I hope all I did inspired students to continue my effort.
“I think with Earth Hour 2024 and 2025, WIS has already demonstrated its unwavering dedication to environmental sustainability and green policies and shows a good example for other schools to follow
Miss May King, principal of WIS added, “I’m incredibly proud of our school’s commitment to sustainability through the Earth Hour event. This initiative not only raises awareness about energy conservation but also empowers our students to take meaningful action in protecting the environment.
Since its inception, WIS has always put the environment high on its list of priorities. Which guides its energy policies, such as having the minimum temperature of 25°C for their air conditioning. In addition, WIS collaborated with SAG Green Tech. Sdn. Bhd. to have solar panels installed, and they have also installed a rainwater harvest tank.
