Hari Raya Aidilfitri is a celebration eagerly anticipated by Muslims worldwide after fasting during the holy month of Ramadan.
The festival not only marks the end of fasting but also symbolises the triumph of Muslims in resisting desires while strengthening familial and fraternal bonds.
In Malaysia, the celebration of Hari Raya Aidilfitri is a vibrant affair, steeped in customs and traditions passed down through generations.
Preparations for the festive season often begin early in Ramadan, with families shopping for new clothes, making traditional cookies, decorating homes, and cleaning their living spaces.
The colourful traditional attire—such as baju Melayu, baju kurung, kebaya, and songket—showcases the uniqueness of local culture and is a source of pride.
On the morning of 1 Syawal, Muslims perform the Aidilfitri prayer at mosques and suraus as a mark of gratitude to Allah SWT.
This is followed by the heartfelt practice of seeking forgiveness among family members and friends, where the phrase ‘Maaf zahir dan batin’ is commonly exchanged, symbolising sincerity in asking for forgiveness and strengthening bonds.
The open house tradition also plays a vital role in fostering unity among Malaysia’s diverse communities.
Unique dishes such as ketupat, lemang, rendang, kuah lodeh, and an array of traditional cookies tantalise taste buds and enliven the festive atmosphere. Hari Raya celebrations in Malaysia reflect the spirit of harmony and racial unity.
Beyond the joy and festivity, Hari Raya Aidilfitri imparts valuable lessons on gratitude and charity. The act of paying zakat fitrah before the Aidilfitri prayer aims to support the less fortunate, ensuring that they, too, can share in the joy of the celebration.
However, amid the festive cheer, Muslims are reminded not to forget their beloved family members who have passed away. Visiting the graves of departed loved ones remains a cherished tradition, accompanied by prayers and the recitation of tahlil as a gesture of remembrance and respect.
Ultimately, Hari Raya Aidilfitri is more than just a joyous celebration. It serves as a platform to strengthen bonds of love and appreciate the true meaning of sacrifice, gratitude, and reflection.
This unique celebration teaches Muslims to uphold noble values in their daily lives, embracing kindness, compassion, and forgiveness.
