The Curious Case of Asado Ipoh

By Anne Das

You’ve driven past it a dozen times on Jalan Tambun ~ the white bungalow with its bold red signage. From the outside, it might not give much away, but step in and you’ll find a restaurant that’s surprisingly warm, modern, and buzzing with flavour. Maybe you wondered what it was, or vaguely remembered it used to be Grove Diner. Well, it’s time to stop wondering and step into Asado.

It’s not hidden. It’s not mysterious. It’s just really good—and finally getting the attention it deserves.

Wine Pairing Dinners make a perfect spot

The vibe? Warm, softly lit, and romantic without trying too hard. Perfect for date nights, small celebrations, or just treating yourself to something flame-grilled and fabulous. There’s an elegance to the marble and wood interior, but no pretence. Seating is a mix of intimate tables and roomy corners, with just enough space to feel cosy without being cramped.

As the evening rolls in, the glow from the open kitchen and flickers from candles on each table give the space a welcoming warmth. Whether you’re coming in dressed up or straight from work, the place feels approachable. There’s even parking within the compound, which makes the decision to swing by after work or on a weekend night that much easier.

You’ll likely see a mix of regulars settling into their usual table, young couples sharing pizza, and friends clinking wine glasses over shared plates.

Iberico ham wrapped around juicy Hammi melon. Simple and quietly addictive. (RM30)
The prawns that made us pause. Gambas al Ajillo with garlic, chili oil, and toast. Pair it with a bold red or a crisp white. (RM78)

We kicked things off with Grilled Corn, sprinkled with cheese and charred just right. The Iberico Hammi Melon—salty Iberico ham wrapped around slices of sweet, juicy Hammi melon—was a standout. Simple, elegant, and full of contrast.

If you’re sharing, don’t skip the Gambas al Ajillo—prawns with dry chili and garlic oil, served with toast. Rich, punchy, and fantastic with a glass of wine.

Not your average pizza—this one’s got seasoned pork and a cheeky drizzle of pistachio oil. (RM48)
Saffron, Seafood and Soul. A generous pan of Asado’s golden paella, perfect for two. (RM78)

The Seafood Paella comes loaded, golden with saffron and full of flavour. Then there’s the Crazy Pork Pizza—crispy crust, bold pork, and a drizzle of pistachio oil for extra oomph. Portions are hearty, so bring a friend or come hungry.

House-made tiramisu and a latte—comfort in a dish and cup. No frills, just good.
Moutai Ice Cream here is made with the famed Chinese liquor. One bite, and you’ll know why.

Two desserts made us pause. First, the Rum & Raisin ice cream, made with Bacardi Gold rum—smooth, strong, and generous on the rum. Then, the Tiramisu, which was creamy, light, and beautifully boozy.

And here’s the kicker: Moutai Ice Cream. Yup, made with the legendary Chinese liquor that goes for around RM1700 a bottle (not for sale). Each scoop is RM45. Bold, boozy, and totally unique.

Asado’s specials change weekly.

The chalkboard near the entrance lists rotating specials—Wagyu Tomahawk, grilled whole squid, Tiger Prawn Bisque. You won’t find the same thing twice, and that’s part of the charm.

A peek at the marble full bar and fire-powered kitchen

There’s a full bar stocked with wine, whiskey, liqueurs, and spirits lining the shelves—whether you’re a cocktail lover or a neat pour kind of person, you’ll be sorted. Drinks-wise, they’ve got your evening covered.

Their Chocolate Martini is as indulgent as it sounds, and the coffee menu (RM10–RM12) keeps things grounded for after-dinner chats. There’s even a cheese board at RM128 for those who want to linger. And yes, you can BYOB—with a small corkage.

Live tunes, low lights. Wednesdays to Fridays at Asado.

Live music plays every Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday from 7.30pm to 10.30pm, featuring a two-piece band— mostly popular tunes with the occasional throwbacks. Nothing too loud. Just enough to nudge your night into something special.

Whether you’re planning a proposal or simply craving smoky meat and cold beer, Asado makes it feel special without making it a big deal.

And if you’re still unsure? Pricing is fair, the portions generous, and the flavours worth coming back for. This isn’t a hype spot; it’s a place to return to. Go once, and you’ll probably end up bringing someone new next time.

End with a board. Cheese, cold cuts, and a little something sweet—just like the night deserves.
