Following the tragedy which took the life of frontliner, Sergeant Safwan Mohamed Ismail in May, the Royal Malaysia Police honoured him with a posthumous promotion to the rank of Sergeant. The workplace accident ex-gratia payment and derivative benefits were presented to his parents, Mohamed Ismail Othman and Norriza Mat Sani yesterday.
Home Affairs Minister, Dato’ Seri Hamzah Zainuddin explained that the presentation was an appreciative gesture to the late Safwan and also all the law enforcement officers who serve the nation.
“The ex-gratia payment and derivative benefits totalled to RM180,135.45. After the posthumous promotion effective May 3, the amount totalled to RM311,380.66 while his beneficiary will receive RM864 per month for life,” he stated during a media conference held at the North Brigade Senior Officers’ Mess.
In addition, the Royal Malaysia Police contingent successfully raised RM52,000 of funds to be presented to the family.
Norriza Mat Sani, 53, expressed her gratitude to the Royal Malaysia Police and Ministry of Home Affairs for the honour.
Present at the ceremony were Secretary General of Ministry of Home Affairs, Dato’ Jamil Rakon and Inspector-General of Police, Tan Sri Dato’ Seri Abdul Hamid Bador.
On May 3, the victim was on duty manning a roadblock at Kajang South Toll Plaza along the Kajang-Seremban Expressway during a COVID-19 operation. He was hit by a speeding four-wheel drive (Toyota Hilux) driven by a man suspected to be under the influence of alcohol.
Safwan, 31, passed away on location from the accident which took place at 2.10am due to serious injury to the head and body.
