Cancer Survivor Appointed as City Council Secretary
Zuraina Kamarul Ariff, 59, is the first woman to be appointed as the Ipoh City Council (MBI) Secretary effective July 1, replacing former Council Secretary Mohd Zakuan Zakaria.
Diagnosed in April 2013 while working at the City Council, the oral cancer survivor was touched by the recent appointment.
“The experience of battling the illness with positivity and perseverance has motivated me to succeed. As a normal human being, I too once lost hope and thought it was the end of my career. Fortunately, with the moral support of the Ipoh City Council, I was inspired once again,” she expressed to the media after the presentation of the appointment letter by Mayor Dato’ Rumaizi Baharin at the Ipoh City Council building.
According to the Mayor, Zuraina’s perseverance is a shining example for all as the cancer survivor did not allow her illness to stop her from continuing to serve the community.
“Zuraina has served in the City Council for 30 years in administrative affairs. I’m confident her skills and experience will enhance service quality and boost the development of the MBI,” he explained.
Zuraina was born in Bagan Serai on March 21, 1961 and began her service at Ipoh City Council on November 15, 1990 as an Engineer (Class J3) before her promotion as Director of the Engineering Department on January 1, 2011. She held the post of Infrastructure and Operation Senior Director from November 15, 2019 before being appointed as the Council Secretary.
Zuraina obtained a civil engineering degree from Middlesex University in London, United Kingdom followed by a master’s degree in science (project management) from Universiti Sains Malaysia in Penang.
