Twenty eight Gavel Club members from SMK Gunung Rapat had a taste of volunteer work by teaching Year 4 and Year 5 children English in five neighbouring primary schools recently. As the junior affiliate of Toastmasters International, Gavel Club aims to encourage better communication and leadership skills among its members. It is for that reason this programme was devised to provide a hands-on experience to youngsters on volunteer work and to provide a platform for them to utilise and hone their communication skills. Selected schoolchildren in SK Wira Jaya, SK Rapat Setia, SK Sg. Rokam, SK Sg. Rapat and SR Al-Hidayah participated in language games and activities, all run by Gavel Club members whose ages range from thirteen to sixteen. The brainchild of the principal of SMK Gunung Rapat, Puan Rahimah Mohamed, it is hoped that this programme will foster networking between neighbouring schools and the spirit of volunteerism amongst Malaysian youths.
