Following a reduction of carbon release by 8.69 percent and an increment of carbon sequestrations by 0.57 percent, Ipoh City Council (MBI) has been awarded a ‘Diamond Rating’.
The Mayor of Ipoh, Dato’ Rumaizi Baharin expressed that the nomination granted by the Low Carbon Cities Steering Committee on January 25 has upped the spirit of the council to continue achieving the Low Carbon City 2030 Challenge (LCC2030C).
“GreenTech Malaysia (MGTC), which is now under the Ministry of Environment and Water (KASA), has executed the Low Carbon City Framework (LCCF) since 2011.
“52 out of 154 local authorities (PBT) have started the LCC initiative and MBI was involved in the LCCF programme on September 17, 2015.
“We received a courtesy call from the Ministry of Energy, Green Technology and Water and MGTC. The ‘Baseline’ measurement implemented by MBI received the ‘Provisional Certificate’ by MGTC on March 28, 2017,” he said in his speech during the council’s full board meeting yesterday (January 27).
LCC2030C is a new initiative projected to accelerate the transformation of cities in Malaysia to become low carbon cities. To ensure the programme fulfills its objective, MGTC is collaborating with PBTs to bring low carbon zones into existence at state capitals and main cities in the whole country.
Low carbon zones focus on energy and water usage reduction from buildings and public areas, besides emission reduction from petrol-based and diesel-based vehicle usage. Emission reduction from residual formation accumulated at waste disposal sites is also emphasized.
Carbon sequestration is the process of capturing and storing atmospheric carbon dioxide. It is a method of reducing the amount of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere with the goal of reducing global climate change.
“MBI has also increased carbon sequestrations from greenery and water bodies, which in a review in 2016 was 571.08 tCO2 (total carbon dioxide)/year in comparison to 572.82 tCO2/year in 2019, with a total application increase of 3.24 tCO2/year equivalent to 0.57 percent,” Rumaizi stated.
