In conjunction with the Ipoh City Council (MBI)-level World Book Day celebration, four individuals received prizes for the most number of books borrowed and read.
By name and category, they were Phuah Im Wah (senior citizen), Seeni Surath Faritha (adult), Mardhiah Mohd Asri (teenager) and V. Kiranyaah (children).
Kiranyaah was the most astounding of all, having read at least 105 books at the wee age of 10.
“My interest in reading started when I was five. I became a member of the Tun Razak Library (PTR) at the age of six.
“Due to my parents’ teaching, my two siblings and I always make time for at least two hours a day to read a book, even though I have my share of school homework to complete.
“I usually take an hour and a half to finish reading a book of around 100 to 200 pages,” said the Marian Convent Primary Girls School student.
Phuah, 58, who’s also a fellow media personnel, stated that he has been practicing the habit of reading since 10.
“Despite my job demands, I try my best to at least read something everyday. Most of the time, I had to extend the duration of borrowing a book from the library.
“I started out reading predominantly Chinese language materials. However, I prefer reading English ones nowadays,” he mentioned.
The programme was held at PTR earlier today (April 23). It was graced by the Mayor of Ipoh, Dato’ Rumaizi Baharin, who awarded the four with appreciation certificates and prize hampers.
Also present were City Secretary Zuraina Kamarul Ariff, as well as City Councillors Dato’ Mazlan Abdul Rahman, Ho Wai Mun and Khoo Boon Chuan, among others.
“I thank the management of PTR and other parties involved for instilling the interest of reading among the general public.
“PTR welcomes any collaborative effort to sponsor and make a go of beneficial programmes like this for the literary betterment of Ipohites,” Rumaizi expressed.
