The Ipoh City Council (MBI) is providing a special initiative: transit homes for poverty-stricken individuals in the city due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
This initiative was introduced as a preliminary step to help the affected community and ensure they are not left behind.
Ipoh Mayor, Dato’ Rumaizi Baharin said the disadvantaged group refers to people who have lost their income suddenly and have no other resources, leading to them losing their shelter.
According to him, this category includes single mothers whose children also lost their jobs in the last six months to a year.
“For a start, MBI will provide five transit homes with one bedroom and one bathroom for the group in Block G, Waller Court, Ipoh.
“Each unit will be equipped with furniture, kitchen and food items. Business capital or employment will be provided for them to continue living and help them afford to rent other houses,” he said.
He said so during the MBI Full Board Meeting of July held virtually today (July 30).
The selected individuals will stay temporarily and do not involve the homeless.
Rumaizi added that MBI hopes to work with non-governmental organisations (NGOs) to manage the residential units as well as identify affected individuals.
“Priority is given to those who have lost their income due to job loss, business closure and single mothers.
“Hopefully, this effort will help ease the burden of Ipohites during the COVID-19 pandemic,” he explained.
