LRT for Ipoh in Development Framework

A light rail transit (LRT) for Ipoh is among the efforts in the state government’s development framework to provide a more modern transport hub to overcome congestion in the future.

Executive Councillor for Housing, Local Government and Tourism, Dato’ Nolee Ashilin binti Dato’ Mohammed Radzi said that as a start, the transport hub will be developed at an area of about 60 hectares around the Ipoh Train Station.

“However, the cost and construction period of the hub is still under the research stage,” she told the press after officiating the Publicity and Public Participation Programme for the Local Plan Draft of Ipoh 2035 and the launching of the Branding and Action Plan of Greater Ipoh Tourism Territory yesterday.

Present were Mayor, Dato’ Rumaizi Baharin@Md Daud and Deputy Director-General (Planning) of Department of Town and Country Planning (PLANMalaysia), Datuk Mohd Faidzal Hamzah.

Nolee stated that besides the LRT, the integrated transport hub will be supported by rapid transit buses, trams and taxis to increase the mobility of residents and tourists.

“We will make it a more efficient and modern transport hub as in Ipoh, many still need to use their own vehicles compared to public transport.

“Thus the matter of public transport will be improved so that it can facilitate residents and also tourists visiting Ipoh besides overcoming congestion in the future and boosting real estate development,” she said.

Next, Nolee stated that the preservation and conservation of the mountains and limestone hills around Ipoh are among the main foci in the draft involving 107 projects with 256 actions drafted to empower the city.

“We have made a few changes in the draft to implement conservation efforts in unexplored areas,” she said.
