The proposal to reopen the country’s borders this March 1 may not happen as the discussion to do so has not been carried out.
This is because the government needs to do the necessary consideration before opening the borders despite the benefits it will bring especially to the economic and tourism sectors.
Prime Minister, Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob said, however, the step to open borders to international tourists will still be done in the future.
According to him, the proposal will be discussed together with the Ministry of Health and representatives of other Ministries.
“We will discuss if it requires the approval of the Special Meeting of the National Security Council (MKN) or Cabinet.
“However, to date, we have yet to discuss it.”
He said so during a media conference after attending a programme at Tangkak, Muar, Johor.
On February 8, the National Recovery Council (NRC) agreed to open the country’s borders as early as March 1, without the need for compulsory quarantine.
Its chairperson, Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin, said COVID-19 tests need to be done according to the recommendation of the Ministry of Health before departure and upon arrival at the country’s main entrances.
