Upon arrival at Rokiah Kopitiam, it feels like you are being transported back to the classical era of the 50s with nostalgic dishes accompanied by songs of then prima donna, Saloma.
Like other food premises, Rokiah Kopitiam also offers dishes for the breaking of fast. With the concept of ‘Cahaya Ramadan’, the ala carte items retain the tastes of traditional Malay and Baba Nyonya cuisines of Melaka.
Among the signature items are Nasi Lemak Sentul, Asam Pedas Set, Daging Lemak Cili Api, Lontong Rokiah, Soto Ayam, Nasi Daging Harimau Menangis, Nasi Goreng Kerabu Daging Salai, Penang White Curry Mee and Rokiah’s Prawn Mee.
Rokiah Kopitiam which is located at Concubine Lane attracts local and international tourists of all ethnicities.
The owner, Nurul Hadjar Jamaluddin@Jay stated that the original structure of the building is retained without any modification, making it a special attraction in addition to its vintage decorations to recreate the ambiance of the 50s.
“This building is a Chinese heritage house of more than 125 years old. During its glorious era, it was a spot for the rich tin miners to place their concubines. Currently, it is among the must-visit locations of the Ipoh Heritage Trail.
“The name ‘Rokiah Kopitiam’ is chosen to commemorate my late grandmother, Rokiah Abu Chik who was a Peranakan from Melaka. I am among those who inherited her cooking skills for Baba Nyonya dishes.
“I know the recipes and secrets for the preparation of the dishes like the back of my hand. Thus, I commercialised it and have obtained an overwhelming response.
Besides the main dishes, diners also get to enjoy the various kuih (traditional cakes) together with a cup of Che Nah coffee. The prices are reasonable from RM15.00 onwards.
For the month of Ramadan, its operation hours are divided into two sessions: Monday to Thursday from 3pm to 10pm and Friday to Sunday from 10am to 10pm. For inquiries and bookings, contact Jay at 018 958 6300.
