Effective immediately, the wearing of face masks is no longer mandatory in buildings or in closed places.
However, it is up to the owner of the premises to decide whether or not their customers need to wear a face mask.
Announcing the matter, the Minister of Health, Khairy Jamaluddin Abu Bakar said, his side still encourages the public to continue wearing it.
“If the owner of the premises decides that they should be worn, then those who wish to enter have to follow the wishes of the owner of the premises,” he said at a press conference in the capital this afternoon.
High-risk individuals such as the elderly, those with chronic illnesses and pregnant women are strongly encouraged to continue wearing face masks when in closed areas.
According to Khairy Jamaluddin, the ministry will continue to monitor the Covid-19 situation in the country and abroad, in addition to ensuring that health services are at an optimal level.
The government began making it mandatory to wear face masks in both open and closed areas, on August 1, 2020, when the Covid-19 pandemic hit hard.
However, on May 1 the order was relaxed with members of the public no longer required to wear face masks in open areas.
