Discussions were held between the Ipoh City Council (MBI) and the Perak Irrigation and Drainage Department (JPS), regarding the recent issue of flash floods in the Chepor Structured Village Plan (RPT).
The mayor of Ipoh, Dato’ Rumaizi Baharin @ Md Daud explained the issues related to flooding, especially in relation to river deepening work under the jurisdiction of the JPS and the District Office.
“The problem of floods and rivers is not under the jurisdiction of the MBI, but under the authority of the state through the JPS and the District Office.
“Last Wednesday we called the JPS and related parties for a meeting and we asked the JPS to look into the matter, especially in regards to the rivers,” he said when asked by reporters about residents who claimed that flash floods in the area were caused by a river that had not been deepened in decades.
Commenting further, Rumaizi said based on the report, the JPS also did not expect such a severe flash flood in the area.
“Based on their (JPS) report, we didn’t expect Chepor to experience flash floods like that,” he said.
In the meantime, he said, MBI has made preparations to face the flood season in the city.
“It is true that we have made preparations. Some projects are ready to deal with floods and we have also carried out drain cleaning works,” he said.
On Wednesday, the media reported a flash flood that occurred at RPT Chepor, caused by heavy rains that caused the Chepor River to overflow.
It was also reported that the density of new development near the Chepor river in addition to the river that was not deepened, was allegedly the cause of the flash flood that affected 93 victims.
