Artisanal And Local Roasted Coffee Served At Ipoh’s Popular Kopitiam

By Anne Das

Located within the Bercham housing estate, and tucked conveniently in a well shaded corner is the Bercham Great Wall Kopitiam. It is not every day that you find a standalone coffee shop in the middle of a housing area with loads of parking space. The route getting there felt like it was only for the people ‘in the know’ but do not be fooled, it was packed with loads of locals and tourists alike enjoying an early breakfast on a Sunday morning.

Great Wall Kopitiam opened in 2017 and has garnered quite a reputation for itself for its selection of great tasting affordable coffees paired with local food. People flock here for more than just the Chicken Hor Fun, Chee Cheong Fun or Fried Kuey Teow, this Kopitiam is particularly dedicated to Coffee lovers.

Run by an amazing Malaysian husband and Vietnamese wife team, this duo passionately serves up a wide selection of coffees, including the Americano, Expresso, Cappuccino, Mocha, Latte and Vietnamese Drip Coffee just to name a few in their modern “Old Skool” Kopitiam.

Speaking with Travis Looi, owner of The Great Wall Kopitiam, “We offer up to 12 different types of roasted coffee beans, there are freshly grounded and brewed upon order”

“We also have a very talented Barista who creates marvellous individual foam art and Ipohites’ are willing to come here for the privilege of having their designer coffee in a casual ‘low key’ environment.”

He explains, “We want to express our passion in ‘do one thing well’, this way we can invest more money into our equipment, ingredients and manpower, so customers can enjoy every sip from their cup while having a variety of food choices right in front of them, in a clean simple place.

There were a few food stalls inside the coffeeshop but what was evident on every table were cups and cups of different shapes and sizes of coffee.

Here are 3 bestsellers you must try when at the Bercham Great Wall Kopitiam.

  1. The Make it Yourself ‘Latte”

Comes with expertly pulled 2 shots of expresso, carefully foamed Hot Milk and Sugar syrup in case you need sugar in your latte. Make it based on how strong you would like it, how milky and how sweet. The choice is yours!

  1. The Vietnamese Egg Coffee

A Hanoi specialty in which a creamy soft, meringue-like egg white foam is perched on dense Vietnamese coffee. ‘Ca Phe Trung’ is made by beating an egg yolk with sweetened condensed milk for about 10 minutes until it makes an airy, creamy, meringue-like fluff. This eggy goodness is then slowly poured on top of hot espresso, or iced coffee.

  1. First Love & Break Up Macchiato

The macchiato is an espresso coffee drink, topped with a small amount of foamed or steamed milk to allow the taste of the espresso to still shine through. But over here, there is a twist! Worth the try.

First Love & Break Up Macchiato

This is a brilliant concept because they cater to everybody. The young and old, KL folks or tourists, there is something here for everybody.
