Dimension-hopping adventure, “Everything Everywhere All at Once” star Michelle Yeoh, has made history with her win for outstanding performance by a female actor in a leading role at the Screen Actors Guild Awards yesterday, becoming the first Asian woman to win this title.

The other nominees for the category were Cate Blanchett (Tar), Viola Davis (The Woman King), Ana De Armas (Blonde) and Danielle Deadwyler (Till).

Tan Sri Michelle Yeoh (60) from Ipoh Perak, has once again bagged a prestigious international award following her two major wins last month. Before concluding her acceptance speech, she shared an important message about representation.

“Thank you for giving me a seat at the table,” Michelle said. “So many of us need this. We want to be seen; we want to be heard. And tonight, you have shown us that it is possible and I’m grateful.”

This second Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert directed film is about Evelyn Wan (Michelle Yeoh), a Chinese American immigrant who finds herself on a wild ride to prevent a powerful entity from destroying the multiverse, all while her family business is being audited by the IRS. The cast includes Jamie Lee Curtis and James Hong.

Outstanding Performance by a Cast in a Motion Picture – EVERYTHING EVERYWHERE ALL AT ONCE

Only the second Asian woman nominated as best actress after Ziyi Zhang for “Memoirs of a Geisha” (2005), Yeoh is also the second Asian woman ever to win a film acting prize after following Yuh Jung Youn’s supporting actress triumph for “Minari” (2020). Asian winners from the television categories include two-time winner Sandra Oh (“Grey’s Anatomy” and “Killing Eve”) and “Squid Game” stars Lee Jung-jae and Hoyeon Jung last year.

“Everything Everywhere” previously scored the top accolades at the Directors Guild and Producers Guild awards. The movie is also a commercial success, selling more than $107 million worth of tickets. It is the highest-grossing movie ever for film distributor A24. The cast of “Everything Everywhere” was named best film ensemble by members of the SAG-AFTRA acting union.

It remains to be seen just how far the movie can go. But at this point, things are certainly looking up for “Everything Everywhere All at Once”, and Tan Sri Michelle Yeoh.

We are waiting with bated breath for the results of the Oscars.
