Community Palliative Care – Who’s responsibility?

By PPCS

In today’s world, dealing with a terminally ill loved one is a challenging task. Palliative care provides much-needed relief to both patients and their families by providing physical, social and emotional support to patients in the end stages of life.

Palliative care is not just the responsibility o f the government or medical institutions but of the community as well.

The Perak Palliative Care Society (PPCS) is a non-profit, non-governmental organisation committed to providing palliative care for terminally ill cancer patients in Perak, regardless of their age, race or religion. The society aims to improve the quality of life of patients and their families by alleviating their pain and suffering through palliative care services.

PPCS’s team of doctors and nurses visit and monitor patients at their homes, providing them with medical equipment and training family caregivers on how to care for the patient. These services are provided free of charge, and patients and their families can register for palliative care services at PPCS’s Centre.

Since its establishment in 1995, PPCS has provided palliative care services to 7,613 registered patients. In 2022, the society served 634 new patients with 4,729 home visits by five nurses and one doctor.

PPCS relies on donations from individuals, ex-patients’ family members, corporations, and grants from the Ministry of Health to finance its operations. The society also organises fundraising activities like the upcoming Charity Food Fair, to be held on May 13, 2023, at the PPCS premises located at 54, Jalan Sultan Azlan Shah, Ipoh. The proceeds from this event will help fund the society’s ongoing services and its new building.

We appeal to everyone in the community to support PPCS’s fundraising efforts and contribute towards providing palliative care services to terminally ill cancer patients in Perak. Let us come together and make a difference in the lives of those who need it the most. For further information, please visit www.ppcs.org or contact PPCS at 05-5464732 or email admin@ppcs.org.my
