UNDP sustainable tourism project in Manjung

LUMUT – A grant of RM962,862 was allocated to the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) to finance a sustainable tourism project in Manjung.

The sustainable tourism project is one of the efforts to deal with the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic on the domestic tourism sector by increasing resilience among communities and businesses.

It is also to improve risk management to reduce the negative impact and potential exploitation of natural and cultural assets.

Through this project, UNDP will provide technical advisory services, local tourism policy input and training to ensure the effectiveness of the programme.

The recipients are Laman Karya Lumut (Lakar), Sahabat Alam Activist Association (Kuasa), Ayer Tawar Kutien Association, Pulih Art Studio Lumut and Manjung Municipal Council (MPM).

MPM President, Syamsul Hazeman Md. Salleh said, as the coordinator, he was grateful that the four projects were selected to receive UNDP funding.

“We are proud to be recipients from among 151 local authorities across the country.

“It was after the agency made a review of project proposals submitted from all over the country,” he said in a statement.

Earlier, the contract signing ceremony with UNDP with the four parties involved was signed at MPM’s Main Hall.

Also present were Perak State Tourism, Industry, Investment and Corridor Development Committee Chairman, Loh Sze Yee and UNDP’s Head of Inclusive Development and Growth, Asfaazam Kasbani.

Manjung has been selected along with two other districts namely Mersing (Johor) and Setiu (Terengganu) to receive the allocation.
