BAGAN SERAI: Two teenage girls who went viral for their involvement in a fight captured on a social media video have since made peace and expressed their desire not to prolong the matter.
Kerian District Police Chief, Superintendent Juna Yusoff, stated that a 48-second viral video depicting a group of teenage girls gathering and engaging in a fight between two of the girls was identified on social media.
He further mentioned that investigations revealed the incident took place last Friday around 10 a.m. in the Bagan Serai area, involving teenage girls aged between 12 and 17.
“All the involved teenagers, along with their families, attended the Kerian District Police Headquarters (IPD) on Sunday at around 6 p.m. to assist in the investigation.
“Both parties involved, expressed their unwillingness to prolong the matter, and their families also decided not to take any further action in the interest of the teenagers’ future.
“A report requesting not to proceed with the case was filed by the victim’s family at approximately 7:21 p.m.
“However, the case involving the dissemination of the video on social media has been referred to the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) for further action,” he told reporters on Sunday.
He urged the public to refrain from sharing the video and avoid making any speculations that could cause public unrest.
Furthermore, he clarified that individuals involved in the spread of false information on social media can be prosecuted under Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998, which carries a penalty of a fine not exceeding RM50,000 or imprisonment for up to 1 year, or both.
Previously, a viral social media video showed a fight between two teenage girls involving several other individuals at a location in Bagan Serai.
