GERIK: Four men were arrested after being suspected of being involved in the stealing of cables belonging to Telekom Malaysia Berhad, on the roadside in the Kuala Kenderong area, here on last Friday.
Gerik District Police Chief, Superintendent Zulkifli Mahmood said that his side received information from the public regarding the presence of a suspicious lorry at 4.30am in front of Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan (SMK) Gerik here.
He further said that officers from the patrol car (MPV) and the Criminal Investigation Division of the Gerik District Police Headquarters (IPD) later managed to arrest the lorry which was driven by a 34-year-old man together with two other 30-year-old men.
“They were arrested at kilometer 26, Jalan Raya Timur Barat Fasa 2, Gerik. As a result of the inspection, it was found that a cable cutter and 42 rolls of cut cable with the inscription Telekom Malaysia Berhad were kept in the back of the lorry.
“The police have arrested the three men and seized all the items in the case. All suspects were remanded from June 30 until today and continued until July 5 for further investigation,” he told reporters here today.
Zulkifli added that Telekom Malaysia also confirmed that the cable belonged to him which was on the roadside in the Kuala Kenderong area.
He also said that they had made a report at the Gerik Police Station on June 30 and the loss was estimated at about RM15,600.
In the meantime, he said, his side managed to arrest another 50-year-old man in Sungai Petani, Kedah who is suspected of being involved in the same case.
“As a result of further investigation, the male suspect was arrested at 1.30 in the afternoon and remanded from today until Thursday for further investigation,” he said.
He further said that the case is being investigated under Section 379 of the Penal Code.
Therefore, he said, the police called on the public to continue to channel any information related to cable stealing activities, so that the crackdown can be further improved.
