IPOH: A 52-year-old female babysitter was arrested for involvement in a case of suspected abuse of a six-month-old baby girl leading to her death.
Ipoh District Police Chief, ACP Yahaya Hassan said, last Wednesday the police received a report from Hospital Raja Permaisuri Bainun (HRPB) that they received a six-month-old baby girl patient in a coma with bruises on her body.
He also said that the hospital also suspected that the injuries suffered by the victim were due to abuse.
“The case is being investigated in accordance with Section 31(1)(a) of the Children Act 2001 (neglecting or abusing a child in a manner likely to cause physical injury).
“Last Thursday, the police investigation succeeded in arresting the suspect, a 52-year-old local woman, who is the victim’s full-time babysitter.
“The investigation team also succeeded in obtaining a remand order on the suspect for four days starting yesterday (Friday) until July 17 for further investigation,” he told reporters here today.
Yahaya said, the victim was confirmed dead at the Children’s Intensive Care Unit (PICU) ward yesterday, at 2.51pm.
He further explained that the results of the autopsy conducted today showed that the cause of death of the victim was an injury to the head caused by a blunt object (blunt trauma of the head).
Accordingly, he said, the case has been reclassified as a murder case and investigated under Section 302 of the Penal Code.
