RUNGKUP: A total of 40 illegal immigrants were arrested by the Marine Police Force (PPM) Kampung Acheh at the coastal waters of Sungai Tiang here today.
Hilir Perak District Police Chief, Assistant Commissioner Ahmad Adnan Basri said that at about 8am today, the police received information from the public about the presence of a boat with a cargo believed to be foreigners at a distance of 1.0 nautical miles from the coast.
He said, acting on the information received, with the help of the marine police team (PPM), the police from the Hilir Perak District Police Headquarters (IPD) moved to the location of the boat suspected of carrying a group of illegal immigrants.
“After conducting an inspection, they found 40 people on the boat believed to be Indonesians.
Ahmad Adnan said, it is believed that the boat was on its way to Tanjung Balai, Indonesia but ran aground due to engine damage.
“All the arrests and confiscations were brought back to the Kampung Acheh PPM operation headquarters for further action.
“The case is being investigated under Section 26a of the Anti-Trafficking in Persons and Anti-Smuggling of Migrants Act 2007 as well as Section 6 (1) (c) of the Immigration Act 1959/63,” he said.
He said, this success is the result of continuous cooperation between the community and enforcement agencies, especially the Royal Malaysian Police (PDRM).
“Therefore, the Perak PDRM calls on the public to continue to channel any information related to crime and help to ensure the state of Perak is safe and secure,” he said.
