I refer to Ipoh Echo’s report titled, “Animals Poorly Treated” on page 7 of Issue 260 (dated June 16-30). Though outwardly the ostriches and the deer may seem to be “poorly treated”, as is reported, the reasons are obvious.
Ipoh City Council is in the process of upgrading all animal enclosures at the Gunung Lang Recreational Park. The upgrading work covers the whole area in question, as it is part of the council’s effort in making the park more visitor-friendly, conducive and also pleasant.
We intend to eventually transform the designated area into a petting zoo for the benefit of visitors. Ponies, gaurs (seladang), miniature cattle (lembu bali), emus and a variety of small birds will be acquired for inclusion in the proposed zoo.
In response to the reported problem, the council has, in the interim, engaged the services of the Sg Siput Veterinary Department to provide medical cover for the animals. The department is also involved in the exchanges of ostriches and selected deer breeds for the park zoo.
I hope the above answer helps to assuage Ipohites’ fear for the safety of the Gunung Lang Recreational Park animals.
