In a remarkable fusion of creativity and history, the talented Interior Architecture and Design Degree students of Raffles College of Higher Education embarked on a mission to breathe new life into the iconic Tin Alley of Ipoh. Their innovative design projects, inspired by the city’s rich heritage, are on display at the Ipoh Art Fest 2.0 until 1st October 2023 (Sunday). They invite the Perak community to step into the past and explore a future where tradition and modernity coexist.
Raffles College of Higher Education is known for nurturing young minds in the field of design and innovation. The final year projects of its students are not just exercises in creativity but endeavours that have the power to transform communities.
The journey began when five enterprising students embarked on a site reconnaissance mission, destined for inspiration. While en’ route to the North, they stopped in Ipoh for lunch and found themselves captivated by the city’s charm. Their investigations unveiled the hidden gem of Tin Alley, a place where history and culture converge.
Tin Alley, steeped in historical significance, played a pivotal role in Malaysia’s tin mining industry during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Known as the “City of Millionaires” in its heyday, Ipoh owed much of its prosperity to the bustling tin industry. Tin Alley stood as a testament to that era, a place where dreams were pursued and fortunes were sought.
Let’s delve into the innovative projects that these students have crafted:
Guang by Tan Wen Yi: Tan’s project, named “Guang,” meaning ‘light’ or ‘hope’ in Mandarin, aims to establish a collaborative hub promoting active ageing while preserving traditional craftsmanship in Ipoh.
Time-Cave by Amber Annastashia: Amber’s “Time-Cave” is an enchanting oasis that offers a peaceful escape from the urban hustle and bustle. This green sanctuary provides a gathering place for local communities to connect with nature.
Zion City by Christine Cheok: Christine’s vision is “Zion City,” a space designed to attract the younger generation for work and living. It offers podcast and workshop-speaking platforms, fostering connections, learning, and self-expression.
Spark of Nature by Chang Yun Ni: Chang’s project, “Spark of Nature,” is an interactive nature discovery gallery in Ipoh. It encourages outdoor activities, enhances visitors’ journeys through immersive spaces, and utilises technology to engage with its audience.
Homegrown Food Lab by Yong Weng Yi: Yong’s “Homegrown Food Lab” is an educational and interactive food lab that collaborates with local chefs to inspire creativity through live culinary demonstrations.
These extraordinary designs were not confined to the classroom but were invited to be exhibited at the Ipoh Art Fest 2.0, alongside the works of many talented Malaysian artists.
Mr. Jason Toh, Programme Director for this collaboration shared his thoughts on this project “Our designs are not just about aesthetics; they aim to enrich the community, preserve our heritage, and create spaces that resonate with people of all generations. We invite the community to witness these remarkable design works. It’s an opportunity to step into history, experience the spirit of Tin Alley and embrace the creative vision of these young talents.”
