Dengue Fever Cases in Ipoh Rise by 244.2% – Mayor

By: Aida Aziz

IPOH: The number of dengue fever cases within the jurisdiction of the Ipoh City Council (MBI) has seen a notable surge, with 1,227 cases reported until September 23 (Epidemic Week: 38).

According to Datuk Rumaizi Baharin, the Mayor of Ipoh, this increase represents a staggering 244.2% surge compared to the 371 cases reported during the same period last year.

“The incidence of dengue fever cases within the MBI’s administrative area has shown an escalating trend since the beginning of this year.

“The continuous rainy season has led to a rise in the density of Aedes mosquitoes, contributing to the sudden spike in dengue cases in September.

“As of September 26, a total of 24 controlled outbreak localities have been reported,” he stated during the Full Council Meeting for September at the MBI Council Hall, held last Friday.

Furthermore, Rumaizi mentioned that there is one uncontrolled outbreak locality in Taman Cempaka with six cases expected to be resolved by October 8.

He added that one hotspot locality in Kampung Tersusun Batu 5, with 21 cases, is also projected to be under control by October 8.

“MBI has conducted 554 inspections of breeding sites, encompassing 33,667 residential and commercial premises.

“Out of these, 126 premises, involving 267 containers, were found to be positive for Aedes mosquito larvae breeding.

“A total of 117 compounds amounting to RM58,500 have been issued, and 30 cases have been referred for legal action due to non-payment of the compounds.

“One case has resulted in a court-imposed fine of RM600 or a three-week imprisonment if the fine is not paid,” he added.
