Ipoh Marches Toward 100% Recycling of Solid Waste with Eco-Friendly Technology

By: Rosli Mansor

Ipoh– The State Government aims to make Perak a zero-waste disposal state by 2030, in line with the third principle of the Prosperous Perak 2030 Plan, which envisions Ipoh as a Low Carbon City by 2030.

Perak’s Menteri Besar, Dato’ Saarani Mohamad, disclosed that this vision is set to be realized through the introduction of a groundbreaking waste disposal system, leveraging thermo waste technology.

“This technology represents an efficient, rapid, and straightforward method for segregating household solid waste.

“Moreover, the segregated solid waste can generate income by producing commodities such as biomass, plastics, and metals for sale to industrial entities,” he stated in a media release today.

He further elaborated that this technology functions by sterilizing and cleaning waste using heat, steam, and pressure, eliminating the need for early-stage separation. Within just 30 minutes, solid waste is transformed into biomass, plastics, metals, and inert materials.

“All these basic commodities can subsequently be sold on the market. For instance, solid waste converted into biomass can be sold as an alternative fuel to replace coal in industrial applications.

“In this context, the Ipoh City Council (MBI) has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Thermowaste Mancuso Energy Sdn. Bhd. and Selekta Spektra to conduct a comprehensive study for the construction of a  plant scheduled to commence in March next year.

“Ipoh is poised to become the first city in Asia to recycle 100% of solid waste using eco-friendly technology. Furthermore, this model can be adopted by other local authorities throughout the state,” he added.
