IPOH: Cases of child abuse over a three-year period have shown an increase in this state, according to data from 2020 to 2022.
Chairperson of the Women, Family, Social Welfare, Cooperative Entrepreneur Development Committee Perak, Datuk Salbiah Mohamed stated that these cases are categorized into four types: sexual, physical, emotional abuse, and neglect, whether abandoned or without parents.
For the year 2020, there were 332 reported cases, followed by a slight increase in 2021 with 370 cases, and a sharp rise last year with 532 cases for the same purpose.
“However, for the current year until November 30, 2023, there has been a significant decrease, with only 168 cases reported and being managed by the Department of Social Welfare (JKM).
“The state government is aware and takes a critical stance on these child-related cases, which are always given adequate attention.
“There are various factors influencing the fluctuation in the statistical trend of child abuse or neglect cases.
“The sudden increase occurred in 2021 and 2022 during the implementation of movement control orders (PKP) due to COVID-19.
“During this period, the pressure and hardships of people confined to their homes have led to highly stressful situations, making children victims as well,” she said.
She said this while responding to oral questions during the 15th State Legislative Assembly (DUN) Conference at the Perak Darul Ridzuan Building here today.
However, she emphasized that the pattern of increasing cases should not be seen as a positive aspect, indicating heightened awareness among the population.
It is evident that both the community and parents are willing to report these cases to the authorities.
“This growing awareness is undoubtedly driven by continuous efforts from various government and non-government agencies. Praise should be given to all agencies, including JKM, D11 PDRM, WANITA Perak, and many others.
“Many advocacy efforts, field campaigns providing explanations, and follow-up actions for child-related cases and issues are actively undertaken,” she said.
