Associated Pan Malaysia Cement’s (APMC) Kanthan Quarry has received the coveted 5-star rating as part of the Sustainable Indicator for Mining & Quarry Management (SDI) Audit conducted by the Department of Minerals and Geoscience (JMG). The Director General of JMG, Datuk Zamri bin Ramli, presented the award at a dinner at the Bangi Resort Hotel. Jasri bin Jolan, Senior Manager at APMC Kanthan Plant, accepted the award on behalf of APMC, highlighting the company’s commitment to responsible quarry management.
At the event, Datuk Zamri said, “The rating was conferred based on the comprehensive results of an SDI audit conducted by JMG officers, based on the quarry’s adherence to stringent criteria encompassing compliance, best practices, socio-economic benefits, green practices, community social responsibility, and aesthetic values.”
Since 1963, APMC’s Kanthan quarry has played a crucial role in Perak’s development, contributing to regional projects like the Sultan Azlan Shah dam and national endeavours including the SMART Tunnel and Petronas Twin Towers.
Reflecting its seriousness in maintaining a balance between the preservation of tropical limestone karst landscape and the industry’s needs for development, APMC was involved in geosite mapping of Bukit Kanthan in 2017.
APMC had worked with a team of experts to scientifically map the geological, geomorphological, and biological high value components of the Bukit Kanthan Geosite.
This effort to delineate a boundary for conservation was in support of the Perak State’s designation of Lembah Kinta as a National Geopark that promotes a balanced sustainable development. The company is the first and only company in Malaysia, involved in the conservation of an active quarry site. In 2021, the quarry was recognized as the Champion of Kuari Lestari at the Environmental Awards by the Perak Department of Environment.
This latest 5-star rating signifies the highest score across audited criteria, underlining APMC’s commitment to excellence. This accomplishment would boost credibility, recognition within the industry, and business advantages.
