Addressing the Issue of Drifting Trash to Prevent Tourism Impact in Lumut, Pulau Pangkor

MANJUNG: The problem of drifting trash in the coastal areas of Pantai Teluk Batik, Lumut, as well as Pantai Teluk Nipah and Pantai Pasir Bogak in Pulau Pangkor, has captured the attention of the Majlis Perbandaran Manjung (MPM).

The issue of accumulated drifting trash in these coastal areas has previously led to dissatisfaction among visitors.

It is not the result of irresponsible residents but rather a consequence of a significant high tide phenomenon that has affected the shores since December 9.

Syamsul Hazeman Md Salleh, the Chairman of MPM, highlighted that Pantai Teluk Batik and Pulau Pangkor are becoming increasingly popular tourist destinations in Perak, attracting visitors from both within and outside the country.

“We have cleared a total of 29 tons of drifting trash at Pantai Teluk Batik. Meanwhile, cleanup efforts at Pantai Teluk Nipah and Pantai Pasir Bogak are actively underway, involving approximately 27 tons of trash collected as of today,” he said.

However, the phenomenon of accumulated trash on the island requires extensive cleanup efforts and a substantial workforce. Consequently, MPM has developed proposals and requested financial assistance from the state government.

“We are seeking one-off assistance for immediate cleanup efforts along the recreational beaches of Pulau Pangkor, particularly Pantai Pasir Bogak and Pantai Teluk Nipah. For the long term, we propose allocating annual funds to address the significant high tide phenomenon on Pulau Pangkor,” he explained.

“The issue of drifting trash due to the significant high tide phenomenon is highly critical at the moment, and if left unattended, it will adversely affect tourism industry planning,” he added.
