KUALA KURAU: The Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency, Maritime Zone of Kuala Kurau, seized 117 dragon traps (illegal fish trap) in the waters of Kerian and Larut Matang Perak yesterday evening and the day before.
The Director of the Kuala Kurau Maritime Zone, Maritime Commander Mohd Najhan Azman Hamid, said that all the dragon traps were seized by the Malaysian Maritime patrol boat team conducting patrols in the waters of Kerian and Larut Matang.
“These dragon traps were discovered through the discovery of suspicious bottle markers and flags and were subsequently inspected.
“The inspection at the first location, 2.4 nautical miles west of Kuala Terong yesterday evening, found 67 dragon traps, while another 50 were found the day before at a location 3.5 nautical miles southwest of Kuala Gula.
“All the seized dragon traps are estimated to be worth more than RM8,000 and have been taken to the Kuala Kurau Maritime Zone jetty to be handed over to the Malaysian Maritime Investigator for further action,” he said here today.
He further stated that the case is being investigated under Section 11(3)(c) of the Fisheries Act 1985, which pertains to installing or causing to install any fish trap, fishing equipment, or fish collecting device without a valid license.
