Malayalee is a term given to the natives of the South Indian state of Kerala – a region known for its excellent blend of culture, traditions and lifestyle.
The Perak Malayalee Association (PMA) organised a cultural show celebrating both Malaysia Day and the annual Hindu festival known as Onam – an auspicious event to the Malayalee community. It was held at the Rayan Cultural Hall, Buntong.
The festival kick-started with a traditional Indian dance by the Nritya Kalanjali Dance Studio. This dance is usually performed during festive seasons and involves graceful and dynamic movements.
“My committee and I are motivated and inspired to create more programmes for our community – especially the youths and women who need our help,” said Datuk Suseela Menon, President of the All Malaysia Malayalee Association (AMMA). “This assures that the Malayalee culture and language will continue for generations,” she added.
An award-giving ceremony was held near the end of the event which bestowed upon students who had passed their UPSR and PT3 examinations with flying colours as well as winners of a colouring contest. Helpers who had gone beyond their call of duty during the recent AMMA Games were similarly awarded.
A traditional Kerala fashion show and a raffles draw concluded the evening event. On display was an array of costumes such as the Mundun Neriyathum and Saris, among others.
“It’s a well organised event,” said a guest. “We Malayalees are indeed very enterprising people.”
A vegetarian feast consisting of authentic Keralan cuisine such as Aviyal, Inju Puli, Thoran, banana chips and Payasam capped the event.
