MANJUNG: In the next two weeks, Pangkor Island will be bustling with activity as it plays host to the religious celebration of Maasi Magam, observed by Hindu devotees on the island.
The Maasi Magam celebration is a significant event celebrated at the Sri Kaliamman Temple on Pangkor Island.
It is also the only Hindu temple facing the sea in Malaysia.
Given that this falls during the school holiday season, the number of visitors expected to flock to Pangkor Island is estimated to exceed 50,000 people.
In light of this, a preparatory meeting for this celebration was held, chaired by the Manjung Municipal Council (MPM) through the Tax-Free Island Management Unit (UPPBC).
Various departments and relevant agencies attended the meeting.
Among those present were representatives from the Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM), Maritime Department, Road Transport Department (JPJ), Pangkor State Assembly Service Center, Pangkor Taxi Association, and the temple authorities.
During the meeting, all parties exchanged proposals to reach a decision focusing on the safety, cleanliness, and comfort of the visitors.
Meanwhile, Pangkor State Assemblywoman Norhaslinda Zakaria, who also attended the meeting, expressed support for the efforts undertaken by UPPBC for the public interest.
She emphasized the importance of coordinating various matters during the meeting due to the expected presence of thousands of visitors to Pangkor Island during that time.
“Given that this celebration coincides with the school holidays, the presence of thousands of visitors needs to be managed as efficiently as possible, including ensuring the smooth operation of ferry services and other transportation,” she said.
