IPOH: The ‘Perak Onion’ brand produced and cultivated by local farmers will soon enter the market to meet the demand for onion supply.

The small red onion BAW-1 is managed by the Perak State Government through the Perak State Agriculture Department.

This variety is produced by the Malaysian Agricultural Research and Development Institute (MARDI).

It is for commercial purposes through the Onion Planting Pilot Project in Kampung Kuala Bikam, Sungkai, which started on January 24th.

Initially, 3.3 metric tons of onions will enter the market starting mid-May and will be sold for RM10 to RM12 per kilogram.

Meanwhile, Menteri Besar Perak, Datuk Seri Saarani Mohamad, announced that the branding as Perak Onion is to differentiate it from other imported onions in the market.

“Since the pilot project for cultivating small onions started in Perak, the state government intends to brand these small red onions as Perak Onions.

“Perak Onions have their own advantages compared to imported onions in the market.

“The difference lies in freshness, crispiness, redder color, and strong aroma,” he said.

Saarani further explained that this effort could be a catalyst for domestic onion production to meet the needs of Malaysians.

This will reduce dependency on onion imports by the year 2030.
