For almost 20 years in Perak, a series of talks has been organised by the Perak Academy to educate, enthral and discuss the be all and end all of life in Perak, within its boundaries and sometimes beyond its frontiers.
In the 3rd talk in its 19th series, an old Andersonian, Koh Chye Hock, who grew up in Ipoh will be speaking on how philosophy has affected his own life and how the study of philosophy has shaped humankind.
To be held on Friday, May 25 at the Perak Academy’s premises at 11, Hale Street, the talk will see a dissemination of Chye’s thoughts about the special place Ipoh has in his heart and also why Ipoh appeals to so many who grew up in this town but had to live elsewhere for career and other reasons.
Running on the topic “The Argumentative Philosophers and Public Conversations”, it will commence at 8pm.
Chan Kok Keong, Deputy Chairman of the Perak Academy stressed that any talk on philosophy strikes at the heart of the Academy’s mission.
“First, the Perak Academy subscribes to the Greek philosopher, Plato’s approach to knowledge by the dialogue method of searching for the truth by poignant question and answer. Secondly, the Perak Academy is particularly delighted to host an Ipoh-born speaker who considers Ipoh his home despite now living in Singapore and having had his higher education in the US and the UK,” Chan explained.
Chye studied philosophy at the University of Utah, USA. On his return home, he settled into a career in law. He is the author of “The Chronicler: One Man’s Diary on Life” containing touching episodes of his growing up experiences in Ipoh which shaped his choices in life. Copies of the book will also be on sale at the talk.
