IPOH: Mayor of Ipoh, Datuk Rumaizi Baharin, confirmed that the Railway Assets Corporation (RAC) will carry out restoration and upgrading works at the Ipoh Railway Station of Keretapi Tanah Melayu (KTM).
He stated that the upgrading works will be executed by the end of this year in collaboration with the Ipoh City Council (MBI).
He also mentioned that the long-abandoned and dilapidated Hotel Majestic will also be included in the restoration list.
“RAC has informed that contractor appointments for the upgrade of the railway station and Hotel Majestic will be made in August.
“We expect the work to commence by the end of this year. I have discussed this with them and they have agreed to restore the station so that both will be beautiful… then we can create an attractive atmosphere.
“Hotel Majestic will remain a hotel. It will be managed by RAC,” he said.
Rumaizi added that the overall budget for the project will be overseen by RAC, and Hotel Majestic is expected to become an accommodation hub for tourists visiting Ipoh.
Dubbed as Ipoh’s Taj Mahal, this white building was designed by AB Hubback, the same British architect who designed the Kuala Lumpur Railway Station.
The original Ipoh railway station was a wooden structure before the construction of the current station began in 1914 to replace the old one.
This station, over 100 years old, serves as the main gateway for rail users to Ipoh, accommodating thousands of users daily, including visitors from outside the city.
