By Zaki Salleh

KUALA LUMPUR: An investigation is underway following a police report concerning the loss of funds from bank accounts involving a loss exceeding RM2 million.

Dato’ Sri Ramli Mohamed Yoosuf, Director of the Commercial Crime Investigation Department of the Royal Malaysia Police, stated that the police report was received in Kuala Kangsar, Perak, on July 9, 2024.

He mentioned that the complainant in this case, an employee of a local bank, reported that a fellow employee at the same bank had committed fraud by transferring funds from customers’ fixed deposit accounts to a third party account.

“This activity was only discovered on June 27, 2024, when two affected account holders came to the bank to withdraw money from their fixed deposit accounts.

“Upon inspection, it was found that part of their fixed deposit certificates had been closed,” he said in a statement.

The customers denied any closure or withdrawal of funds as claimed by the bank.

Based on the bank’s investigation, it is suspected that one of their employees made the withdrawals and deposited the funds into several different bank accounts.

The case is being investigated under Section 408 of the Penal Code.
