IPOH: The Ministry of Housing and Local Government (KPKT) is currently reviewing a proposal to amend the Local Government Act 1976 (Act 171) to include stricter penalties for littering offences.
Legal officers within the ministry are examining the potential amendments, which could see offenders being required to perform community service as part of their punishment.
The proposed changes come in response to the ineffectiveness of fines in deterring irresponsible behaviour.
This initiative was shared by Minister Nga Kor Ming on his official Facebook page. According to him, one of the penalties being considered is to have offenders engage in community service, such as sweeping the streets under the scorching sun.
“I also suggest creating TikTok and social media ads to shame those who carelessly litter,” he added.
Kor Ming further noted that an order has been issued to local authorities, instructing them not to offer any discounts on littering fines.
Littering remains a persistent issue, reflecting a negative mindset that is difficult to eradicate. Ipoh is no exception, with some residents continuing to litter openly, even in public spaces.
Complaints about this issue are frequently raised by the community, who desire a clean and well-maintained environment.
