53 Years Later: CHIJ Ipoh Alumni Return for Memorable Reunion

Ipoh – The reunion after 53 years was a memorable moment for 48 former students of Convent Holy Infant Jesus (CHIJ), Ipoh.

The event not only allowed them to reconnect but also to celebrate their 70th birthdays together.

Chairperson of the CHIJ Alumni Association, Loh Foong Leng (Veronica Sammy), said the gathering successfully brought together classmates from all over the world, including New Zealand, Australia, the UK, Brunei, and the United States.

“We are former students of CHIJ, also known as Main Convent Brewster Road, Ipoh, from the years 1960 to 1971.

“Some of us have not met since leaving school in 1971, but the friendships have remained strong even though we have moved to different countries,” she told Ipoh Echo/Peraktastic after the event, which was held at WEIL Hotel recently.

Loh added that their first reunion was held 10 years ago when they turned 60.

“This reunion is deeply meaningful, filled with heartwarming memories of our school days.

“However, it takes considerable effort to organise such an event, so we cannot hold it every year,” she said.

She also noted that while most of the attendees still reside in Malaysia, particularly in Ipoh, Kuala Lumpur, and Petaling Jaya, the presence of those who travelled from abroad demonstrated the strength of their long-lasting camaraderie.

“We hope this reunion will inspire the younger generation to understand that even though they may live abroad, they should never forget their ties to old friends and their homeland,” she added.

“The memories of our school days are forever etched in our hearts, even though time has passed. This reunion has become a cherished moment for all of us,” she concluded.
